Derbyshire Fire & Rescue have provided the following tips to help ensure a safe and happy Christmas:
- Any temporary staff you take on will still require fire safety training, ensure they know all of the routes out of your premises and what to do in case of fire or any emergency.
- Extra stock should be kept clear of exits and not block escape routes, ensure that all exits are still available at all times.
- If you are putting a Christmas tree up, ensure that it does not block any exits and it does not obstruct fire signs or notices.
- Check tree lights for signs of damage and ensure they meet the current British Standard (BS), look for the kite mark to be sure.
- Do not attach decorations to lamps or lights as they may easily catch fire.
- Fire alarms and equipment should still be checked and tested during the Christmas period, revise your management procedure if staff members are away to compensate.
- Avoid overloading electrical sockets with extra plugs, check how much power is being drawn from power outlets. If the total amperage of the fuses exceeds that of an extension then itโs likely to overheat.
- If you are hosting a party, consider the capacity of the space you are using, and what people will be doing. Think of how to control numbers into the premises.
- Check the Derbyshire Fire and Rescue website for more information or get in touch for further advice.
