Derby Supports The Great British Spring Clean – Thanks To Cathedral Quarter And St Peters Quarter BIDs

15 Mar 2024

Streets in Derby city centre will be jet washed, cleared of litter, and have gum removed from pavements – thanks to the Cathedral Quarter and St Peters Quarter Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), working in partnership with Derby City Council.

The annual clean-up campaign is part of this year’s Great British Spring Clean which runs from March 15th to March 30th.

As part of the national event, local businesses have been invited to get involved with a litter picking event which will take place across Cathedral Quarter and St Peters Quarter on Thursday, March 21.

Participants will join staff from the BID’s, Derby City Council’s Streetpride team, local councillors, and Public Protection Officers.

During the rest of the Great British Spring Clean period, the BID teams, partnered by Derby City Council, will undertake other tasks like sticker and fly-poster removal, weeding and window cleaning of vacant units. Local businesses will also be sprucing up their own business frontages with general cleaning activities.

Brad Worley, the BID’s Manager, is delighted to be supporting the Great British Spring Clean this month and is keen for more local businesses to sign up.

He said: “Whilst we are aware that is the council’s responsibility to keep the city clean, as BIDs we are pleased to work together and get behind this national campaign. It is rewarding to see so many BID businesses already engaging with each other, exchanging knowledge and ideas as a community.

“We already have a significant number of businesses joining us, but more are always welcome.”

Councillor Hardyal Dhindsa, Derby City Council Cabinet Member for Communities and Streetpride, said: “It is fantastic to see our local businesses and volunteers taking to the streets this month to help make our city centre a cleaner and more attractive place to be. By working in partnership, the Council can achieve so much more.

“‘We are working hard to make the city as clean a place as possible, and the more that local businesses and organisations can join to work in partnership, the better. So please come and sign up for this campaign if you haven’t already done so.”

The Great British Spring Clean is back for its ninth year and is the nation’s biggest mass-action environmental campaign and encourages everyone to pledge to pick up a bag of litter, or more during the campaign.
