Sport England produced a report for Derby City Council showing that by 2028, much of the city’s existing swimming pool stock would reach the end of its active life without significant investment. This included Queen’s Leisure Centre, which, by then, would be 96 years old.
In 2017 essential maintenance works were undertaken to extend the life of the centre by up to five years, to 2022.
At the same time, work has been underway on the design and build of a new 50m swimming pool, learner pool and water park at Moorways Sports Village, due to open to customers in spring 2022.
Previous cabinet reports (November 2017 and in February 2019) have detailed the expectation that Queen’s Leisure Centre will close when Moorways Sports Village opens.
There are a number of reasons that support this expectation including:
– age and design of Queen’s Leisure Centre is not suitable for modern leisure use
– cost of any repairs and maintenance to the facilities
– closure of the Teaching Pool, its changing rooms and the Gym due to ongoing maintenance and health and safety issues
– the significant cost of repairs and maintenance required for all three pools
– cost of large-scale refurbishment to keep the facility open in the long-term
The council is proposing to cease operating the leisure provision at Queen’s Leisure Centre when Moorways Sports Village opens in spring 2022.
